Smithfield is one of the most fascinating areas in the City. Located outside the original Roman wall, it became the site of religious houses, the world famous St. Bart’s Hospital and the 800-year old Smithfield Market. This tour covers the brutal stories of prisons, executions and bodysnatching, the birth of medical care, the rowdy street fairs and more recent developments including the Elizabeth Line and the City’s Culture Mile.
We’ll meet outside the Central Criminal Court in Old Bailey on the corner of Newgate Street a few minutes before 2.00 pm and finish close to Farringdon tube/Elizabeth Line/Thameslink stations. We’ll go come rain come shine so do come prepared – there are under cover stops on the way.
